Wilmot Place Safe and Healthy Streets

The Commonplace engagement survey, which has been available on this page during the trial scheme, is now closed.

Following the consultation we have decided to implement the changes permanently. You can read the  decision report  and this page will be updated shortly with more information on the final changes.

What was the challenge on Wilmot Place?

Wilmot Place and Rochester Road were being used by through-motor traffic to avoid the junction of St Pancras Way and Camden Road making these residential streets unsafe for residents and people walking and cycling in the area.

Residents highlighted issues with through-motor traffic on the Kentish Town Healthy Streets Project Commonplace map .

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.

How have we responded to this challenge?

We have installed barriers and a droppable bollard near the junction of Wilmot Place and St Pancras Way preventing through-motor traffic along Wilmot Place and Rochester Road.

Access to all properties on both sides of the restriction has been maintained so residents are still able to reach their homes by car and receive home deliveries but through-motor traffic is prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to travel through at all times. Emergency services and bin collection teams are able to lower the bollard for access.

This change reduces the amount of motor vehicles travelling through these streets making it safer for people walking and cycling locally, to shop and reach the entrance to Rochester Terrace Gardens.

You can find out more about these changes in the notification letter and on our website.
