Red Lion Street and Dane Street Safe and Healthy Streets

In August/September 2021 we ran a consultation on the changes we proposed for this area. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had over 255 responses to our consultation and you can read the decision report relating to this which includes our feedback to the responses. Read the Fact Sheet on this scheme

We made permanent changes in this location including:

  • Making the motor vehicle restrictions on Red Lion Street and Dane Street permanent.
  • Widening pavements on Red Lion Street and introducing new trees and greening.
  • Making parking, waiting and loading changes on Dane Street.

We also intend to introduce a new restriction on southbound motor traffic on Bedford Row at the junction with Sandland Street, including building out the pavement, a southbound cycle facility and other public realm improvements.

What was the issue on Red Lion and Dane Street?

There was an issue on Red Lion Street and Dane Street where traffic was using these roads as a short cut from Theobalds Road to Procter Street and High Holborn. This was making it unsafe for people walking and cycling in the area.

This has been reported by members of the public on the Making Travel in Camden Safer Commonplace and by local ward Councillors.

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.
