Making changes across Camden

We're making changes across Camden to make your neighbourhood safer and healthier. This includes:

  • Ensuring less traffic uses residential streets as a cut through to main roads
  • Widening pavements to make it easier for people to move around (especially with pushchairs or mobility aids)
  • Supporting cycling by adding new cycle lanes and infrastructure like cycle storage hangers and dockless bike and e-scooter bays
  • Creating Healthy School Streets to make it safer for children and families at pick up and drop off time, supporting more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school

We're making these changes after hearing from our residents, businesses and stakeholders from our previous Commonplace .

Why are we doing this?

Whether it’s an essential journey like taking your children to school, getting to work or just popping out to enjoy your local park we want you to love where you live, and to love Camden.

We want to support the 17 recommendations from Camden’s Citizens Assembly on the climate crisis, which included requests for more segregated cycle lanes/ car free zones. These changes also helps to deliver our own Transport Strategy priorities , which were strongly supported when we consulted on them, including increasing walking and cycling, improving public transport, improving air quality and making our streets and transport networks safe, accessible and inclusive for all.

How are we making changes?

We are making these changes using a mixture of Temporary Traffic Orders and Experimental Traffic Orders which allow us to trial changes on streets to see how they work. You can find out more about these in our frequently asked questions

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on the changes we have been making.

  5. Frequently asked questions

We know that more people around Camden are cycling now with many more who’d like to give it a go.

We are making lots of improvements to make cycling easier and safer locally and offer a free cargo bike loan scheme for parents and cycle skills training courses for adults and children.

Visit www.camden.gov.uk/cycling for more information or to see the others ways we can help you to cycle more.

It is important that people travelling by bike are able to do so as safely and as comfortably as possible, and we know that many people will be taking up cycling for the first time or may be less experienced cycling on London’s busy roads. We have ambitious plans for our cycle network. The map below shows where we would like to add new cycle lanes.

Our website also has all the latest information on the new residential cycle storage hangers we are adding across the borough so that our residents can keep their bikes safe and dry especially where indoor space is limited. We are also adding a network of dockless bike hire bays to keep bikes off the pavement leaving more room for pedestrians to walk.

Camden is supporting local businesses and working to create destinations for our residents and visitors to enjoy that are vibrant and inviting.

Streateries were created when COVID-19 changed how we used cafes, restaurants and pubs many are now being kept to continue to boost local businesses.

Streateries provide new space on the road to place outside tables and chairs, protected by barriers. This creates more space on the pavement for people to pass by and allows people to enjoy eating and drinking outside safely.

We'd love your views on the changes we are making - comment on our dedicated Streateries commonplace and if you fancy eating out at one use the map below to find your nearest!
