Constantine Road and Savernake Road Safe and Healthy Streets

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views in our consultation and on this website. We had over 340 responses to our consultation and you can read the decision report relating to this including our feedback to the responses. You can also read the fact sheet with information on the scheme.

What's happening now

We have now decided to make the following permanent changes:

  • Keep the through-traffic restriction on Savernake Road to stop vehicles from cutting through between Constantine Road and Mansfield Road.
  • Extend the pavement to create more space for pedestrians and add new trees and planting.
  • Introduce two-way cycling on Cressy Road, to the north of Agincourt Road, to improve cycle permeability
  • Introduce a new electric vehicle charging point on Savernake Road, at the junction with Estelle Road.

Access to all properties on both sides of the restriction has been maintained so residents are still able to reach their homes by car and receive deliveries but through-traffic is prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists are able to travel through at all times. Emergency services and bin collection teams are able to lower the bollards for access.

What was the challenge on Constantine Road and Savernake Road?

There was a high volume of motor vehicles using Constantine Road and Savernake Road as a cut through to avoid the lights at the junction at Agincourt Road and Mansfield Road, making these residential streets unsafe for residents, school children and people walking and cycling in the area.

As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.

The changes we have made reduce the amount of motor vehicles travelling along Constantine Road and Savernake Road making it safer for people walking and cycling locally, to shop, reach the entrance to Hampstead Heath, Gospel Oak Primary School and the Royal Free Hospital.
