Leather Lane

Improving the Leather Lane area

Consultation now closed - results will be posted here when available. We want to help make the streets around Leather Lane safer and healthier especially when the market is open. We&rsquo;re collecting your views on our ideas to prevent vehicles driving through the market when they are not allowed, making it unsafe and unpleasant for market traders, residents and visitors. We are now consulting on making the following changes:&nbsp;<ul><li id="isPasted">Changing the market hours and traffic restriction times to 8am - 4:30pm so that they match. This would mean a reduction in market hours by 3.5 hours per day, giving more opportunity for business loading and general access whilst improving safety during the reduced market hours.</li><li>Closing Leather Lane (at all times) to motor vehicle through-traffic with bollards at the junction with Clerkenwell Road (except for cycles and emergency services). This would reduce the amount of through-traffic at all times, making the street safer, improving&nbsp;air quality and making&nbsp;it more pleasant for residents and visitors to the area. A separate consultation will be undertaken for proposed changes on Clerkenwell Road and the public space to the north of Leather Lane.</li><li>Installing &lsquo;drop-down&rsquo; bollards at the junctions of Leather Lane and St Cross Street and Hatton Wall. Emergency services, market traders and those cycling would be able to access at any times. This would reduce the instances of general motor traffic accessing at times when they are not permitted.</li><li>Closing Baldwin&rsquo;s Gardens (at all times) to motor vehicle through-traffic at the junction with Leather Lane (except for cycles and emergency services). All vehicles would still be able to access the street from Grays Inn Road. This would reduce the amount of through-traffic at all times, making the street safer, improving&nbsp;air quality and making&nbsp;the area more pleasant for residents, those travelling to school and those visiting the area. A separate consultation will be undertaken for a proposed timed Healthy School Street on Baldwin&rsquo;s Gardens to improve road safety for children travelling to and from school (whilst maintaining resident access).</li><li>Adding double yellow lines and preventing loading at the junctions of Leather Lane and St Cross Street and Hatton Wall to prevent vehicles blocking the road and keeping it clear for emergency access.</li><li>Making the small northern section of Leather Lane (between Hatton Wall and Clerkenwell Road) two way to all traffic.</li><li>Allowing cyclists to access Leather Lane from Greville Street.</li></ul>

Belsize Lane Healthy School Street

Consulting with youOver three weeks during October and November 2022 we ran a consultation on on our proposals to implement Healthy School Street restrictions on Belsize Lane (outside St Christopher&rsquo;s School) and to add two bike hangars on each of Belsize Lane and Wedderburn Road.&nbsp;Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We are proposing to make changes on Camden Street at the junctions of Bonny Street and Camden Gardens to improve walking and cycling access across Camden Street.The proposed changes would provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, with continuous footway crossings at the junctions, more space on the pavement and allow cyclists access between Bonny Street and Camden Gardens.The consultation results are being reviewed.&nbsp;

Phoenix Road Safe and Healthy Streets

Consultation resultsDuring March 2023&nbsp;we consulted on changes proposed for the Phoenix Road area.Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had 79&nbsp;responses and following the consultation, we have made the decision to implement the proposed trial and permanent changes.The new scheme around Phoenix Road are now being constructed and a postcard has gone to all local residents and businesses. Kemble Street area road safety and public realm improvements consultation

We expect to start making changes in spring.We want our streets to have more safe space for everyone to walk and cycle, for children to get to and from school safely and healthily, for businesses to be able to flourish, to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles, and for you to be breathing cleaner air.The Council has secured funding via a legal agreement from the Space House redevelopment to deliver pedestrian, cycling, and environmental improvements nearby.This includes changing the junction of Kemble Street and Wild Street to improve how the road and the hard and soft landscaping improvements being delivered via the redevelopment works within the site boundary fit together.At Kemble Street we want to make it safer and easier to cross the road and take the opportunity to enhance urban greening. This could allow for plants or a tree to be planted as part of the built out space.On Kemble Street we are going to:&bull; Widen the pavement at the junction of Kemble Street and Wild Street to slow traffic, make it easier to cross the road, and provide space for urban greening. This will include the removal of two pay by phone parking bays.&bull; The area around the new widened space will have double yellow lines provided to keep the junction clear from parking, making it safer and easier to cross the road, in line with our Borough-wide safer junctions programme as part of our Road Safety Action Plan&bull; Change the single yellow lines at the junction of Wild Street and Keeley Street to double yellow lines to keep the junction clear from parking, as above.&bull; Add dropped kerbs and tactile paving slabs across Wild Street at the junction with Kemble Street to make it easier for people to cross the road.
