Healthy School Street now permanentDuring September and October 2022 we consulted on whether to make the trial Healthy School Street, two way cycling as well as the addition of two bike hangars permanent. Thank you to everyone who shared their views. <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3799">We have now decided</a> to make the following permanent changes:&bull; Healthy School Street motor vehicle restrictions on Bidborough Street, Hastings Street and Tonbridge Street between 8.15am &ndash; 9.15am and 3pm - 4pm, Monday to Friday term time only.&bull; Two way cycling on the same sections of the above streets.&bull; Installing two new bike hangars on Tonbridge Street (opposite Argyle Primary School) creating secure parking space for up to 12 standard bikes for local residents.What was the issue?The school suffered with parking issues, congestion, road danger and poor air quality outside the school, making it unsafe for the school community.As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation and commented here on the changes we trialled. We now have all the permanent changes in place&nbsp;<a href="https://s3-eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/commonplace-customer-assets/safetravelcamden/FACTSHEET_Arlington%20Rd%20LTN.pdf"></a>What was the issue in the Arlington Road area?Motor vehicles, including heavy goods vehicles, used the residential streets to the west of Camden High Street between Mornington Crescent and Camden Town as a cut through to avoid using main roads. Significant volumes of traffic also used Mornington Street and Mornington Crescent to access Camden High Street. This made the streets unsafe for residents and people walking and cycling through the area.There were a large amount of suggestions from members of the public to improve this area on the <a href="https://camdensafetravel.commonplace.is/comments/5ebc6a1846d2460010b3af56">Making Travel in Camden Safer Commonplace</a> and in July 2020 a petition signed by 613 people asked for a local weight restriction on streets in this area to create a Low Emission Neighbourhood / Low Traffic Neighbourhood.As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on our roads for those who need it the most.How did we responded to this challenge?We have listened to the communities feedback and made changes to reduce traffic levels on the residential streets around the Arlington Road area from Mornington Crescent to Camden Town, as well on Buck Street.The measures include restrictions to traffic via no entry signs, planters, islands and cameras. We have made changes at six different locations:<ul><li>Jamestown Road junction with Arlington Road</li><li>Buck Street junction with Kentish Town Road</li><li>Arlington Road junction with Delancey Street</li><li>Mornington Street junction with Albert Street</li><li>Albert Street junction with Mornington Place</li><li>Mornington Place junction with Mornington Crescent</li></ul>You can find out more about these changes in the <a href="https://www.camden.gov.uk/documents/20142/181204604/Arlington+Road+Area+LTN+letter+WEB+VERSION.pdf/40875e47-da88-bad4-9637-310e591194a9?t=1600865720543">notification letter</a>During December 2021 we consulted on a number of proposed amendments in the area, in response to feedback received via email, on our online Commonplace website and via direct contact with residents during the trial period for the above mentioned measures, so that the Arlington Road Area Low Traffic Neighbourhood will work better for local people. Amendments to the Arlington Road Area Low Traffic Neighbourhood Scheme Public consultation . The amendments to the scheme were implemented in February 2022. Healthy School Streets create a safer and healthier environment by restricting roads outside schools to non-exempt motor vehicle traffic at drop off and pick up times.&nbsp;This enables more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school, with less air pollution, road danger, congestion, and more space for people to interact. The schemes help to discourage car trips, particularly amongst parents and carers, by providing a safe and inviting space for more walking, cycling, and scooting.

Our changes here

Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on our roads for those who need it the most.How have we responded to this challenge?Cliff Villas outside Brecknock Primary School will be temporarily closed to motor vehicle traffic at school drop off and pick up times in the morning and afternoon between 8:00am - 9:15am and 3pm - 4pm, Monday to Friday during term time only.Exemptions for the scheme are available for residents and businesses on Princess Road, as well as for Blue Badge holders that require access. Other exemptions (including temporary or one off exemptions) may be agreed with the council on a case by case basis. Widening the PavementIn addition to the above scheme we responded to the fact that the pavement outside Brecknock Primary School on York Way, was too narrow for people to gather while queuing outside the school gates at school drop off and pick up times. We now have all the permanent changes in place&nbsp;During September and October 2022 we consulted on whether to make the trial Healthy School Street on Croftdown Road permanent. W<a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3799">e have now decided</a> to make the following permanent changes:&bull; The Healthy School Street motor vehicle restrictions on Croftdown Road. The scheme restricts non-exempt motor vehicles between 8.15am &ndash; 9.15am and 3pm &ndash; 4pm, Monday to Friday during term time only.&bull; The closure of one arm of the St Albans Road &ndash; Croftdown Road triangle junction. Permanent changes to improve local bus journey times, cycling and more safer space for Torriano Primary School

We now have all the permanent changes in place&nbsp; <a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3662" id="isPasted">Decision report - Camden Park Road and Torriano Avenue Safe and Healthy Streets - Camden Council</a> What was the issue in the Camden Park and Torriano Avenue area?Analysis identified that TfL bus routes 390 and 393 suffered delays along Camden Park Road and Torriano Avenue throughout the day. It is important that those needing to travel by bus (such as NHS staff and other keyworkers) are able to do so safely and efficiently. There was also a lack of cycling provision along here, making cycling unattractive and intimidating. Pavement space was restricted around the school, with parked cars taking up space that could be used to help children, parents, carers and teachers to socially distance.High vehicle speeds have also been observed along Torriano Avenue and Camden Park Road with residents telling us historically about this problem as well as during the public consultation. This restriction will prevent motor vehicles from using Murray Street as a cut through between Camden Road and Agar Grove, however exemption is applied for cycles, emergency services and refuse vehicles via the use of automated traffic enforcement cameras. An additional exemption on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will be applied for those travelling in the southbound direction only to enable HGV access to local properties.</li><li>New motor vehicle restriction on North Villas between Cantelowes Road and Camden Terrace using &ldquo;motor vehicles prohibited&rdquo; signage by an arrangement of two wooden planters and enforced using automated traffic enforcement cameras. This restriction will: prevent vehicles contravening the Murray Street motor vehicle restriction by</li><li>restricting southwest traffic movements</li><li>prevent vehicles from turning right into Camden Terrace from North Villas</li><li>prevent vehicles from performing a U-turn on North Villas to avoid the banned right turn</li><li>New &ldquo;motor vehicles prohibited, except for access&rdquo; signs on two wooden planters on Cantelowes Road between Camden Square and Abingdon Close to encourage motor vehicles to use North Villas instead of Camden Mews when travelling northeast on Camden Square (west).</li><li>Removal of the existing &ldquo;no entry&rdquo; restriction signs at the junction of Camden Square (west) and Cantelowes Road for local egress.</li><li>New &ldquo;mandatory left turn&rdquo; signs at the exit of Camden Mews at junction with Camden Park Road to prevent motor vehicles from travelling straight through to York Way.</li><li>New &ldquo;continuous crossing&rdquo; and an updated/more visible &ldquo;motor vehicles prohibited, except for access&rdquo; signs at the entrance of Camden Mews (junction with Camden Park Road) to deter traffic from using the section of Camden Mews between Camden Park Road and York Way. This will connect the new cycle schemes on St Pancras Way, Camden Park Road, York Way and the existing &ldquo;Cycleway 6&rdquo; route connecting Kentish Town to Elephant and Castle.</li><li>An extension to the existing advisory cycle lane on Agar Grove leading up to the junction with St Pancras Way to the new parallel zebra crossing, and further east towards the Agar Grove Estate bus stop. It also has a poor road safety record, particularly at the Chalk Farm Road/ Ferdinand Street/ Juniper Crescent junction, with 46 casualties recorded over 3 years prior to the trial scheme.Transport for London (TfL) have identified Chalk Farm Road as a high priority route for installing cycle lanes due to its useful east-west alignment. It easily links cyclists to many other new and existing protected cycle routes, encouraging cycling as a mode of transport.In order to respond to these issues, we installed new cycle lanes in both directions on Chalk Farm Road, upgraded pedestrian facilities, and improved the Ferdinand Street/ Juniper Crescent junction, as a part of a trial scheme under an Experimental Traffic Order (ETO). The decision report related to this ETO can be viewed <a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=2978">on our website</a> .Further consultation on implementing the changes permanently&nbsp;We are retaining&nbsp; the following:<ul><li>Three signalised pedestrian crossings with countdown facilities. This is to provide safer crossing facilities for pedestrians.</li><li>The Junction layout of Ferdinand Street/ Juniper Crescent. This is to provide safe access for walking and cycling across junctions, minimise delays to traffic and buses and facilitate the Morrisons development on Juniper Crescent which is currently under construction.</li><li>Way-finding signage at the junction of Chalk Farm Road and Hartland Road. This is for the continuation of the cycle route to Kentish Town/ Camden Town via Hartland Road.</li><li>Four bus stop bypasses. This is to provide safe continuous cycling and help protect bus journey times.</li><li>Under the trial scheme, we relocated some parking provision to nearby side roads. We are proposing to not make any further changes to parking.</li><li>Keeping the relocated parking is to facilitate the cycle lanes in both directions along the main corridor.</li></ul>We replacing&nbsp; the following:<ul><li>Zebra crossing outside Camden Market to be replaced with a new signalised pedestrian crossing.</li><li>Current &lsquo;kerb and wand&rsquo; segregation for the cycle lanes to be replaced with raised stepped cycle tracks in order to improve better ride quality and a more useable width and improve emergency vehicle response times.</li><li>Bus Stop CD outside Haverstock School to be relocated to east of Crogsland Road and converted to a new bus stop bypass. This location is better for passengers visiting the local shops, venues and roads to the north of Chalk Farm Road. and will help reduce the overcrowding of pedestrians at the entrance of the school at closing times.</li><li>Taxi parking facility outside Camden Market to be relocated to east of Crogsland Road and to be shared with a new timed loading bay. This is to accommodate the continuity of the cycle track.</li></ul>We are adding&nbsp; the following:<ul><li data-uw-rm-mod="">Installing approximately 8 new benches to provide opportunities to rest, particularly for the elderly and people with disability.</li><li>Installing approximately 15 new trees along Chalk Farm Road to improve air quality, biodiversity, shade and improve the public realm of the street.</li><li>Improved junction layout at Haverstock Hill/ Chalk Farm Road/ Adelaide Road/ Regents Park Road/ Crogsland Road, including a new signalised pedestrian crossing and dedicated signal stages for cycles. This will help reduce through-traffic in the Eton Road/ Steele&#39;s Road area as there will be safer and easier vehicle turning movements to/ from Adelaide Road.</li><li>Installing new &#39;blended pedestrian crossings&#39; <a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="http://(i.e.">(i.e.</a> continuous pavement) across side roads of Belmont Street, Harmood Street and Hartland Road, to provide pedestrian priority and reduce vehicle speeds at side roads.</li><li>Installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Haverstock Hill, outside The Enterprise Bar and Hotel, to provide safer access and accessibility for pedestrians.</li><li>Installing 5 new cycle parking facilities at 2 locations to encourage more people to cycle.</li><li>Installing blue surfacing across junctions and side roads to provide an increased awareness of cyclists.</li><li>New bus stop bypass between the junctions of Harmood Street and Hartland Road. This will require the current zebra crossing to be relocated nearby and upgraded to a new signalised pedestrian crossing for added pedestrian priority. The new bus stop will better serve routes from Ferdinand Street and provide better access for pedestrians visiting Camden Market and nearby attractions.</li><li>Installing new low level planting areas on a majority of sections of new and current bus stop bypasses. Sections of the current bus stop bypass islands to be replaced with low level planting areas. This is to improve the look and feel of Chalk Farm Road, and to improve biodiversity and sustainable drainage.</li><li>Installing new double yellow lines with double blip markings (no parking/waiting at any time) along the scheme route to prevent vehicles from parking and loading on the cycle lane.</li></ul>In September and October 2021 we consulted on making the trial changes permanent and new measures in this area to improve conditions for walking as well as cycling. We had over 250 responses, and following the consultation, we have made the decision to proceed with implementing the changes permanently. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3415">We have now decided </a> to make the following permanent changes including no Motor Vehicle signage and bollards at the junctions of:<li>Harmood Street and Clarence Way </li> <li>Hartland Road north of the junction with Clarence Way (at Holy Trinity &amp; St. Silas School/Church)</li> <li>Hartland Road, near the junction of Hawley Road</li>The changes will also include parking changes on Hartland Road as well as widened pavement and a new green space on Hartland Road.What was the issue on Clarence Way and Hartland Road?These residential streets were being used by motor vehicles as a short cut between Chalk Farm Road, Prince of Wales Road and Kentish Town Road making these streets unsafe for residents, school children and people walking and cycling in the area.In previous engagement residents have also reported concerns about dangerous driving by motor vehicles. As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most. Access to all properties on both sides of the restrictions has been maintained so residents are still able to reach their homes by car and receive home deliveries but through-traffic has been prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to travel through at all times. The Commonplace engagement survey, which has been available on this page during the trial scheme, is now closed.In July 2021 we ran a consultation on whether to make the trial through traffic restriction on Savernake Road permanent alongside a new proposal for cycling improvements on Cressy Road and a new Electric Vehicle Charging Point (EVCP) on Savernake Road. As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most. London Rental E-scooter TrialStatus: In ProgressWe want to know what you think of the London Rental E-scooter trial here in Camden. For the last 8 months we’ve been taking part in Transport for London’s trial of rental e-scooters with 200,000 trips made so far in Camden alone! We&#39;ve got 189 dedicated parking bays keeping the streets tidy where you can easily pick up and park rental e-scooters. With over 4,000 rental e-scooters in London you should be able to find one if you want to have a go. Did you make one of the 200,000 trips that have taken place in Camden so far? Or have you not used the scheme, but want to share your views? Tell us what you think of the trial so far using the survey below.The Trial Camden joined the London Rental E-scooter trial scheme on 27th September 2021. The scheme is being led by Transport for London (TfL) who are running the trial following permission from the Department for Transport (DfT) for trial schemes to be developed by regional and local authorities.Camden is taking part in this trial to provide an additional, electric-powered form of transport for people to use instead of cars and/or busy public transport services. Rental e-scooters complement tube, rail and bus services in the borough. They can only be used and hired in boroughs participating in the London Rental E-scooter Trial.The key aspects of the trial are:<li>There are three rental e-scooter operators: Dott, Tier and Lime. </li> <li>Rental e-scooters can be booked via each operators phone app (Android and iOS).</li> <li>Users will require at least a provisional driving licence and a payment card (credit card or debit card) in order to sign up with an operator through their app.</li> <li>Operators will be responsible for providing their fleet of e-scooters for rental and managing them on-street. </li> <li>Camden have provided a network of parking bays to be used as shared dockless hire bays by rental e-scooters and dockless hire bikes. Nearly all bays are on the road to keep pavements clear for pedestrians.</li> <li>E-scooters can be hired from dockless hire bays and must be returned to one of these bays at the end of each hire.</li> <li>Rental e-scooters will not be permitted in Camden parks and this will be controlled with geofencing technology using inbuilt global positioning satellite (GPS) hardware on each e-scooter. Access to the Regents Canal will also be prohibited by geofencing, as well as Regents Park, Primrose Hill Park and Hampstead Heath.</li> <li>Additionally, it is still illegal to ride a private e-scooter on a public highway or pavement and the Metropolitan Police will take action against any private e-scooters that are caught riding on the public highway. This will include confiscation of the illegal e-scooter. Safe and Healthy Streets project to add a Zebra crossing

During May/June 2021 we consulted on changes proposed for Ferdinand Street.Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had 16 responses and following the consultation, we have made the decision to implement the proposed changes permanently. Construction is planned to start in mid April 2022.<li>Replacing the crossing point outside the Harmood Children&#39;s Centre with a new zebra crossing</li> <li>Widening areas of pavement on each side of the road</li> <li>Installing new rain gardens (sustainable draining and planting) and new cycle parking on the built out area</li>You can read the <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3298">decision reports relating to thi</a> s, and our feedback to the consultation responses in the decision report. For information on the upcoming scheme you can <a href="https://camden.gov.uk/Ferdinand">read the documents prepared for the consultation</a> Scheme OutlineThe scheme will include a new Zebra crossing outside the Harmood Children’s Centre that aims to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians and improve road safety in the area. The proposal will include the new built-out of the footways on both sides of the road that will:<li>Shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians to 6.5 metres, nearly halving the total crossing distance, removing the need for a pedestrian refuge island.  Reducing the carriageway width can also have a traffic calming effect.</li> <li>Add-in rain gardens (sustainable drainage and planting.</li> <li>Add-in cycle parking for 6 to 8 bikes.</li> <li>We also consulted on the measures required to provide temporary standing space for the diverted 27 service to ensure that all residents and businesses in the area are aware of the proposed changes and the reasons for why these are necessary.</li>Providing temporary standing capacity for the number 27 bus service will require the temporary relocation of 7 of the permit holder bays adjacent to the Denton estate. It is planned that 6 of these are relocated to existing paid for bays to the immediate north and south of this location on Ferdinand Street. As part of the changes, bus stop KS that serves the number 24 bus service will be reduced in length to create an additional permit holder bay. This will not have a detrimental impact on the service. An additional paid for bay will be provided at the northern end of Ferdinand Place to minimise the loss of paid for parking provision. There will be no net loss of resident parking provision

Goods Way Pop-up Cycle Lanes

STATUS: COMPLETE We have improved the existing cycle lanes on Goods Way between Kings Boulevard and Pancras Road making it safer for cyclists. STATUS: CompletedWe have made changes which included reallocating road space to favour pedestrians and cyclists giving more space for people to physically distance, the changes were brought forward earlier than planned in order to support sustainable transport during the pandemic.Thank you to everyone who shared their views on this project.In March 2022, the Council <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3549">made the decision to make the changes on Grays Inn Road permanent. </a> Background to changesThe scheme was  <a href="https://consultations.wearecamden.org/communications-strategy-improvement/gray-s-inn-road-cycling-walking-road-safety-propos/">consulted on</a> in winter 2019 and now provides road safety benefits and improvements to the public realm in this busy area.  We know from previous engagement with the local community and stakeholders including a study carried out in 2016 (‘Kings Cross-Farringdon Public Realm”) that there were a number of issues preventing people from walking and cycling in and through this area. Feedback from the local community highlighted issues within the area including:<li>High levels of traffic on residential streets in the area</li> <li>The severance caused by major roads on communities and on pedestrians.</li> <li>Cluttered streets</li> <li>Lack of protected facilities for cyclists and the feeling of being unsafe.</li>We also know that Gray’s Inn Road is within the top 10% of roads in London providing the busiest cycle connections as well as suffering from high levels of road traffic casualties.In response to these issues, we established a long-term vision to improve the network of streets between King’s Cross and Farringdon, including Gray’s Inn Road. These works were the third phase of this vision and will specifically targeted issues of road safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Protected cycle tracks, enhanced pedestrian facilities and upgraded junctions on Gray’s Inn Road help deliver this.What changes have been made?<li>New segregated cycle lanes in both directions on Gray’s Inn Road between Harrison Street and High Holborn making it safer and easier for cyclists to travel around the area.</li><li>Cycling improvements at the junction with Ampton Street/ Sidmouth Street and Calthorpe Street/ Guilford Street.</li> <li>New continuous pavements (blended crossings) at selected junctions with side streets giving pedestrians priority in these location.</li> <li>Bus stops along the corridor are to be consolidated (reduced in number and relocated to maintain spacing) to minimize the impact on bus journey times and journey reliability.</li> <li>Relocating parking and loading provision onto neighbouring side streets giving more space for pedestrians and cyclists while still supporting local business and resident use.</li> How can I find out more?As there was an immediate need for these safety improvements in response to Coronavirus we used an Experimental Traffic Order to implement the changes. During the trial period we are working closely with businesses on Gray’s Inn Road to establish a <a href="https://deliveriesandservicingincamden.commonplace.is/proposals/grays-inn-road">Freight and Servicing Action Plan.</a> The experimental scheme will run for 18 months and you are able to comment at any time on the changes we have implemented. At the end of the trial period, we will not carry out another full public consultation on whether or not to make the scheme permanent. These changes included quick to install cycle facilities to help protect those choosing to cycle on one of London’s strategic cycling corridors.TfL also installed a bus stop bypass near Netley Street and applied blue surface colouring on the road to make the cycle lane clear to road users.TfL is not currently running a formal consultation on this scheme, but would like to know about your experiences, to help inform what they do next. We will share he results of the full public consultations shortly.What was the issue on Harmood Street?In June 2020 we received a petition from local residents requesting the reduction of motor vehicle though traffic on Harmood Street. Traffic counts were conducted on Harmood Street in September 2020 and showed that the volumes of motor vehicle traffic using the street are high for a residential street. There is an excess of an average of 2000 motor vehicles a day - 787 motor vehicles per day moving northbound and 1307 moving southbound. As a direct response to the petition and the traffic counts we proposed a motor vehicle traffic restriction on Harmood Street. During December 2020 we consulted on the proposed scheme. The consultation is now closed but you can read details of the consultation and our response to it on our <a href="https://consultations.wearecamden.org/supporting-communities/chalk-farm-road-and-harmood-street-area/">Harmood Street Consultation</a> .In general we know that more cars than ever are using residential streets to cut through between main roads. Recent figures from the DfT suggest a <a href="http://72.2%">72.2%</a> increase in traffic using residential streets in London since sat-navs were introduced. As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.How have we responded to this challenge?Following the consultation, we made the decision to add a motor vehicle traffic restriction on Harmood Street. You can read <a href="http://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3188">the decision report</a> . This will prevent motor vehicles from proceeding, in both directions, past a point approximately 20 meters south of the junction of Harmood Street with Clarence Way. Properties in the area of Harmood Street to the north of the restriction will be accessible via Prince of Wales Road. Properties in the area of Harmood Street to the south of the restriction will be accessible via Chalk Farm Road.This measure will be introduced to reduce the high levels of through traffic which use Harmood Street to access Prince of Wales Road to the north and Chalk Farm Road to the south and give added protection to those visiting the Camden Centre for Learning.To do this we will:<li>Add an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera enforced motor vehicle restriction south of the junction of Harmood Street with Clarence Way to prevent motor vehicles from proceeding, in either directions, through the restriction along Harmood Street</li> <li>Add ‘No Motor Vehicle’ signs and planters on the road and bollards on the pavement to enforce the restriction</li> <li>Relocate 4 resident parking spaces on Harmood Street, east of the restriction, to the west side of the street, opposite of the junction of Harmood Street with Clarence Way. As a result we made several amendments to the trial scheme, including improvements for emergency services, making the cycle lanes more visible and improving the pedestrian crossing points. Following feedback from the consultation we are making the spacing between wands wider in most places than initially proposed, so that there will be sufficient space along the route for vehicles to pull over, if safe to do so, to allow emergency vehicles to overtake. Blue surfacing across side roads has also been provided drivers with increased awareness of those cycling.</li> <li>Adding 4 new zebra crossings and one new signalised pedestrian crossing.</li> <li>Introducing new benches along the Haverstock Hill / Rosslyn Hill corridor. This will provide a place for people to stop and rest (to be completed).</li> <li>Extending the hours of operation of the bus lane from Monday - Friday 3pm - 7pm (current) to Monday - Sunday 24/7. Following feedback from the consultation we have made a small amendment to the northbound pavement close to the junction of Ornan Road to provide space for a wider 1.5m protected cycle lane whilst ensuring buses and motorists are not delayed unnecessarily. The existing bus lane will remain and a 2m wide pavement will be provided.</li> <li>Adding shared use bus boarders (SUBBS) at most northbound bus stops to enable cyclists to remain separated from traffic throughout their journey. Following feedback from the consultation we will not be installing any potential southbound SUBBS at this stage.</li> <li>Improving the experience at junctions for those walking and cycling by adding ‘pedestrian countdown’, ‘Cycle Early Release’ and larger Advance Stop Line facilities.</li> <li>Removing the majority of parking provision on Haverstock Hill/ Rosslyn Hill and relocating some of this provision to adjacent side roads. Some disabled parking and some loading provision has been retained on Haverstock Hill/ Rosslyn Hill and an extra disabled parking bay has been provided.</li> <li>Installing more cycle parking to help people switch their journey to the shops by bike.</li> <li>The scheme has been implemented under an 18-month Experimental Traffic Order, which enable the improvements to be implemented on a trial basis. This allows the Council to observe how the proposed changes are operating before carrying out a full public consultation, after around twelve months of the trial period, to help inform whether or not the scheme is made permanent.</li>Have your sayWe are using Experimental Traffic Orders to make these changes. This allows us to trial changes on streets as an experiment so that we can see how they work before any decision on whether to make them permanent is made. The bus lanes also permit taxis and motorcycles. Prior to September 2020, these bus lanes had only operated at limited times, around the am/pm peak times, with the following hours of operation • Bus lane CMO15: Monday – Friday 7am -10am• Bus lane CMO16: Monday – Friday 7am -7pm• Bus lane CMO17: Monday – Friday 7am -10am, 4pm -7pm and Saturday 10am-7pmOutside of those hours of operation, the bus lanes were occupied either by parked cars and/or moving general traffic, which disrupted bus journey time reliability and created less safe conditions for cycling.The permanent changes:Following a trial and consultation the permanent changes includes retaining all the elements of the existing trial scheme, such as the ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions within the bus lanes, the loading bays and 24/7 hours of operation of the bus lanes, as well new improvements<li>Extension of hours of operation of bus lanes CMO15, CMO16 and CMO17 on Highgate Road to 24/7 – “at all times”.</li> <li>Waiting and loading restrictions to be extended to ‘at any time’ in all bus lanes.</li> <li>Addition of two loading bays outside 109-111 Highgate Road and outside 12 Highgate Road with hours of operation of 7pm-7am for loading for commercial properties.</li> <li>The extension of bus lane “CMO15” that runs southbound on Highgate Road as far as the zebra crossing at the roundabout with Swains Lane, with 24/7 operation.</li> <li>The removal of 10 permit/paid for parking bays on Highgate Road, opposite Parliament Hill Fields bus stop (Stop GL) to be replaced with &#39;at any time&#39; waiting and loading restrictions. This will provide space for safer road widths, as well as space for the southbound bus lane extension.</li> <li>Widening the pavement on the southbound kerbline at Parliament Hill Fields bus stop (Stop GL), to improve bus stop accessibility and increase pavement space.</li> <li>Removing 18 permit/paid for parking bays on Highgate Road, opposite Grove Terrace. Replaced with single yellow lines and single blips with hours of operation of 7am-7pm to remove a pinch point caused by the existing parking bays, which has been raised as an issue through feedback on Commonplace and by stakeholders during the trial scheme.</li> <li>New ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions at the junction of Highgate Road and Carrol Close, to improve road user and pedestrian safety, in alignment with the “Safer Junctions” programme outlined in the Camden Transport Strategy (CTS).</li>

Healthy School Street to make the street safer outside the school

Holmes Road Healthy School Street

What is the issue?There are two schools situated on Holmes Road, St Patrick’s Primary School and Collège Français Bilingue de Londres. Local stakeholders, including representatives from both schools, have highlighted issues of road safety on Holmes Road including high levels of through traffic, which can reach over 200 vehicles per hour at peak times.Raglan Street is a small residential street sometimes used as a short cut for people travelling by motor vehicle especially since changes were made to Anglers Lane to prevent this road also being used as a shortcut. Neither Holmes Road nor Raglan Street are designed to carry large numbers of motor vehicles.How have we responded to this challenge?Between December 2020 - January 2021 we ran a 4 week consultation on the changes we proposed for this area. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. 79% of respondents supported a restriction on Holmes Road and 58% supported a restriction on Raglan Street.We had over 190 responses and following the consultation we have made the decision to implement the proposed changes as a trial. Kentish Town Healthy School Street

What is happening now?Following a consultation we have now <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3799">made the decision</a> to make the following changes permanent:<li>The Healthy School Street motor vehicle restrictions on Islip Street. The scheme restricts non-exempt motor vehicles between 8.15am – 9.15am and 3pm – 4pm, Monday to Friday during term time only.</li> <li>Newly extending the restricted area to start at the junction with Kentish Town Road. This will mean that this further section of Islip Street along with Frideswide Place and Wolsey Mews (to the junction with Caversham Road) will become part of the timed restriction area. Residents living within this area will be eligible to apply for an exemption.</li> <li>The year round timed waiting restrictions on Wolsey Mews (between the junction of Islip Street and Caversham Road) between 8.15am – 9.15am and 3pm – 4pm, Monday to Friday</li> <li>The pavement widening outside the school with an extension of 10.7 metres further to the east and widening the pavement at the junction of Hammond Street and Islip Street.</li> <li>Newly relocating two car club bays from Islip Street to Caversham Road.</li> <li>The northbound ‘at all times’ motor vehicle restriction on Hammond Street. King Henry Road Area

Consultation resultsThank you to everyone who responded to our consultation. Between January and March 2021, we undertook a 7-week consultation on a number of proposed changes in this area. We had over 1,700 responses and following the consultation we made the <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3553">decision to amend the original proposals</a> . The original proposals included motor vehicle restrictions in three locations to prevent vehicular traffic travelling through the area on Elsworthy Road and King Henry’s Road. Under the revised proposals, these restrictions were replaced with width restrictions which were intended to restrict through-access to HGVs.Following further Officer investigation and feedback from local ward councillors, the decision was made to amend the scheme again. The aforementioned width restrictions have been substituted for an area-wide 7.5t weight restriction, which was considered to be more appropriate to the area, and aligns with similar approaches used elsewhere. The proposed pedestrian improvements on Primrose Hill Road and the Healthy School Street on Elsworthy Road adjacent to St Paul’s School have been retained. What is the challenge in the King Henry&#39;s Road Area.The King Henry’s Road area currently experiences significant volumes of through traffic, with vehicles using the area to travel between Primrose Hill Road, Adelaide Road and Avenue Road. Traffic data shows that both King Henry’s Road and Elsworthy Road can each experience approximately 2000 daily vehicle movements in each direction. Combined daily total traffic volumes for both King Henry’s Road and Elsworthy Road can therefore exceed 8000 vehicle movements. Traffic analysis indicates that 74% of this is through traffic - i.e. it is not accessing a property or business within the scheme area (10% is HGVs).Traffic analysis also shows that the average speeds on King Henry’s Road and Elsworthy Road is in excess of the 20mph speed limit, and that speeds through this area are some of the highest in the borough. These traffic conditions therefore present a safety risk to some of our most vulnerable road users, such as children attending St Paul’s Primary School, as well as having a detrimental impact on the east – west cycle route that passes through the area.What’s going to change?Following the public consultation in January-March 2021 and amendments made to the original decision report from August 2021, we are now going to implement an area-wide <a href="http://7.5t">7.5t</a> ‘except for access’ weight restriction in the area outlined in the map you can find at the bottom of this page. We are also going to prohibit motor vehicles on the eastern end of Elsworthy Road at school dropoff and pick-up times, whilst making some improvements to the pedestrian infrastructure on Primrose Hill Road next to St Paul’s School.<li>Create an area-wide 7.5t ‘except for access’ weight restriction. This will prevent larger HGVs using the roads within the area as a cut-through between adjoining main roads.</li> <li>Create a Healthy School Street restriction on Elsworthy Road between Mondays and Fridays from 8am - 9am and 3pm - 4pm during term time. This will prevent motor vehicles from accessing Elsworthy Road between Elsworthy Rise and Primrose Hill Road during these times.</li> <li>Install relevant signage to alert drivers of the 7.5t ‘except for access’ restriction and timed Healthy School Street restriction.</li> <li>Make improvements for pedestrians on Primrose Hill Road adjacent to St Paul’s School, including widening the pavement and adding a new zebra crossing in place of the existing informal crossing to the immediate north of the junction with Oppidans Road. This will now be placed further north than in the original proposals to allow the introduction of a continuous clearway between the two zebra crossings to discourage pick-ups/drop-offs outside the school.</li>How can you give your views during the trial?We are using an Experimental Traffic Order to make these changes. This enables more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school, with less air pollution, road danger, congestion, and more space for people to interact. The schemes help to discourage car trips, particularly amongst parents and carers, by providing a safe and inviting space for more walking, cycling, and scooting.

Mansfield Road Area - Safe and Healthy Streets

What was the issue in the Mansfield Road area?It can be uncomfortable and intimidating to cycle around Mansfield Road, and difficult for cyclists to cross the road towards Hampstead Heath to the north, or the existing cycle network to the south. Crossing the roads for pedestrians is also challenging. How have we responded to this challenge?We trialled a parallel zebra crossing on Mansfield Road near the junction with Estelle Road. As part of this trial, motor vehicle access from Mansfield Road into Estelle Road was restricted. We have now made this trial permanent. During the trial we heard concerns about access from Savernake Road for large vehicle such as fire and ambulance vehicles, due to the narrow road width between a parking bay and the cycle hanger (on Estelle Road near the junction with Savernake Road).To respond to this concern, we are proposing to remove the 7.8m CA-L resident parking bay (near the junction with Savernake Road). This will improve access for large vehicles such as those for deliveries and or fire/ambulance vehicles. Changes to be made permanent We have now made the trial changes on Millfield Lane permanent, keeping Millfield Lane one way, northbound for motor traffic, and two way for cyclists as well as widening the pavement at the southern end of the street. In October/November 2021 we ran a consultation on the changes we proposed for this area. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. We had over 140 responses to our consultation and you can read the <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3466">decision report</a> relating to this which includes our feedback to the responses.The consultation and feedback during the trial period, highlighted concerns about road safety for pedestrians using these streets and difficulties with vehicles passing. We are therefore also creating additional spaces for safe passing places for drivers and measures to improve visibility for all road users, as well as additional pavement widening at the northern end of Millfield Lane to assist pedestrians crossing to the Heath. These changes will help to improve road safety for all road users. These changes will be constructed in summer 2022. As a result we are aware that Oakley Square (north) is being used as a cut-through by vehicles seeking an alternative route to travel southbound down Eversholt Street. We are therefore making changes to ensure that this residential street does not continue to suffer from this traffic.What is the trial?Vehicles will no longer be able to enter Oakley Square (north) from Crowndale Road to reach Eversholt Street. To do this we will:<li>Introduce a no-entry to motor vehicles into Oakley Square (north) from Crowndale Road. (Emergency service vehicles will be exempted from this order).</li> <li> Install wooden planters at the entrance to Oakley Square (north) to deter people from ignoring this banned movement.</li>Work is scheduled to commence on the 8th December 2020 between 9am and 5pm - some minor noise should be expected.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views.We had approximately 250 responses and following the consultation we have decided to implement the trial on a permanent basis, whilst making several new walking, cycling and road safety improvements and improving how the area looks. In August 2021 we consulted on whether to make the trial changes on Prowse Place and Willmot Place permanent, as well as whether to introduce additional changes. to respond to feedback during the trial. <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3424"> We have now decided</a> to make the following permanent changes:<li>Make the the motor vehicle traffic restrictions on Prowse Place and Wilmot Place permanent</li> <li> Moving the existing zebra crossing closer to Wilmot Place and introduce a parallel zebra crossing</li> <li>Make parking changes on St Pancras Way</li>We are also intending to trial two- way traffic on Jeffreys Street / Wilmot Place, between Prowse Place and St Pancras Way and trial a protected eastbound cycle lane between Royal College Street and St Pancras Way. We intend to start construction on the permanent changes in May 2022. Details on how to respond to the forthcoming statutory consultation on the trial changes, on Jeffreys Street/ Wilmot Place, will be available on notices on local streets, in the Camden New Journal and a link will be added here when available. What was the issue on Prowse Place?This area was used as by traffic cutting through between Camden Street and Royal College Street/ St Pancras Way. This has been highlighted by local residents as an issue, which could also be heightened by TfL’s proposal for a banned left turn from Camden Street into Camden Road. As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most. Access to all properties on both sides of the restriction have been maintained so people can still reach their homes by car and receive home deliveries but through-motor traffic is prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists are able to travel through at all times. Emergency services and bin collection teams are exempt from the restrictions. You told us the entrance to the street is uninspiring &ndash; that&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;re laying down a &lsquo;welcome mat&rsquo; that will make it clear you have entered the Queen&rsquo;s Crescent market with an iconic crescent design. What&rsquo;s more, this welcome mat will make crossing the road here safer and easier.We will also be making Queen&rsquo;s Crescent a more pleasant, comfortable, and safe place to visit with the introduction of lighting that will improve the feeling of safety when it&rsquo;s dark, improved footways, and seating along the street that will allow people to rest when visiting the Crescent.We will also look to increase the number of trees on the Crescent &ndash; one of your main requests to make the street more pleasant. This aimed to assess the ground underneath the road and pavement to understand what new additions &ndash; such as trees &ndash; we will be able to install on the street.We would like to thank you for your patience during these works.We will soon be providing updates on the final design of the street &ndash; Please stay tuned for updates.History of the ProjectFollowing a <a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="https://consultations.wearecamden.org/supporting-communities/queens-crescent-traffic-free-environment/">public consultation</a> in early 2021, we introduced a trial motor traffic-free environment on a section of Queen&#39;s Crescent between Bassett Street and Weedington Road. We also introduced a motor vehicle restriction on Weedington Road and on Grafton Road to prevent traffic that used to travel down Queen&#39;s Crescent from using these streets as a route between Southampton Row/Malden Road and Kentish Town Road/Prince of Wales Road.The need for improvements to Queen&rsquo;s Crescent to support walking and cycling and reduce traffic volumes and speeds was first identified in 2015 via the Gospel Oak Regeneration consultation. Since then, a scheme of public realm improvements on Queen&rsquo;s Crescent has been developed in response to the findings of the Gospel Oak Regeneration consultation. Since 2015 the scheme has been through the following steps:<ul><li>2015 &ndash; Local community shared priorities for Queen&rsquo;s Crescent via the Gospel Oak Regeneration consultation, identifying key issues including dangerous driving and rat running. Suggestions were made to reduce through traffic and improve the pedestrian and cycle environment.</li><li data-uw-rm-sr="">2019 - &pound;1.1m was secured from the Mayor of London&rsquo;s Good Growth Fund to support improvements to Queen&rsquo;s Crescent.</li><li>2019 &ndash; Camden undertook a co-design with the community to guide a programme of public realm improvements and support for the market. Through this process local people expressed a clear priority to address vehicle dominance on the street and improve pedestrian experience</li><li>2019 &ndash; The Queen&rsquo;s Crescent Public Realm Strategy was prepared which included green planting and trees, build outs and raised tables to slow traffic, feature lighting and infrastructure to support the market.</li><li>2020 &ndash; A full public consultation on the Queen&rsquo;s Crescent Public Realm Strategy was due to take place during the summer of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the consultation had to be postponed.</li></ul>During the summer of 2020 a proposal in the Stage 2 report was brought to the funder&rsquo;s (the Greater London Authority (GLA)) Design Review Panel. The GLA&rsquo;s panel indicated that a more ambitious scheme should be considered to respond to the challenges posed by the pandemic and the priorities raised by the community in the Stage 2 report. During the community co-design of the Queen&rsquo;s Crescent Public Realm project, local people expressed a clear priority to address vehicle dominance on the street and improve the pedestrian experience, which included:<ul><li>Slowing traffic</li><li>Restricting/reducing parking</li><li>Reducing congestion/traffic numbers</li><li>Making Queens Crescent one-way</li></ul>In response to the feedback from the GLA and local residents an enhanced public realm scheme is being proposed as a trial. The experience gained during the trial and the information gathered from the community to date and during the trial will feed into a proposal for a permanent scheme which will be consulted on 6 months after the launch of the trial. This permanent scheme proposal consultation will potentially contain both elements of the trial and elements of the proposals within the Stage 2 report of the Queen&rsquo;s Crescent Public Realm project.We had over 340 responses and following the consultation we have modified the proposals based on the feedback received and made the decision to implement the proposed modified changes as a trial. Redhill and Cumberland Market Safe and Healthy Streets

What is changing?We are trialling a number of changes in the Redhill and Cumberland Market area for up to 18 months this includes:<li>A Healthy School Street outside Christ Church Primary School on Redhill Street </li> <li>Timed vehicle restrictions on Redhill Street at both junctions with Albany Street</li> <li>An at-all-times vehicle restriction at the junction of Redhill Street and Cumberland Market;</li> <li>Nash Street ‘except for access’ (with access restrictions at the junctions with Robert Street and Albany Street)</li>We are also introducing permanent road safety and pedestrian improvements on Cumberland Market, under a Traffic Management Order (TMO). This includes:<li>A continuous pavement (two metres wide) around Cumberland Market</li> <li>Removing eight residents’ parking spaces and converting five paid-for parking bays on Augustus Street to shared-use parking bays (i.e. can also be used by those with residents’ permits)</li> <li>Four new raised pedestrian crossing points across Cumberland Market</li> <li>Two new disabled parking bays</li> <li>Three new bike hangars and cycle parking stands around Cumberland Market.</li>This decision followed a public consultation on these proposals, which took place between 16 February 2022 and 9 March 2022. <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3668">The Decision Repor</a> t sets out the reasons for the proposed changes and our response to the comments in the public consultation.Why are we making these changes?These changes are part of the Council’s wider strategy to create safe travel in Camden. Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation and commented here on the changes we trialled. We now have the <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3416" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">permanent changes</a> in place.&nbsp;What was the issue on Sandall Road?There was a &#39;rat running&#39; issue as motor vehicles used the residential streets to cut through from east to west from Camden Road to Kentish Town Road making the roads unsafe for residents and for people walking and cycling in the area.As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most.How have we responded to this challenge?We have added a droppable bollard on Sandall Road near to the entrance to Cantelowes Gardens to prevent through-motor traffic.Access to all properties on both sides of the restriction has been maintained so residents are still able to reach their homes by car and receive home deliveries but through-traffic has been prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to travel through at all times. We&#39;d like your feedback about the trial changes we have recently implemented on Saturdays in the western section of the Somers Town CA-G Controlled Parking Zone. In Summer 2021 we consulted on proposals to change the parking arrangements in the CA-G controlled parking zone (CPZ). Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views. Following the consultation we have made the decision to introduce parking controls on Saturdays from 8:30am – 1:30pm in parking bays in the area will not change - and remain with no controls on Saturdays. You can read the <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/mgIssueHistoryHome.aspx?IId=59995&amp;PlanId=472&amp;RPID=52424098">decision report</a> , which includes our feedback to the consultation responses. We have sent a letter to all local residents and stakeholders outlining the trial taking place which you can find at the bottom of this page.What changes are we testing?Parking controls will be introduced on Saturdays between 8.30am and 1.30pm in resident permit holder and paid for parking bays only within the westernmost part of CA-G CPZ (shown in the plan below). This will mean that parking is prioritised for resident and permit holders during this time. Healthy School Streets in Somers TownSomers Town has received funding from the Mayor of London to become a more sustainable neighbourhood, through the Future Neighbourhoods 2030 Fund. Through the implementation of 10 different projects, Somers Town Future Neighbourhoods 2030 aims to make Somers Town a more climate resilient and healthy place to live. We’ve been trialling changes on St Pancras Way to help make streets safer and healthier by adding new cycle lanes so getting around by bike is safer and easier. The commonplace survey here is now closed. <a href="https://democracy.camden.gov.uk/mgIssueHistoryHome.aspx?IssueId=59997&amp;OptionNum=0">The changes here are now approved to be made permanent. </a> We will update this page ahead of the permanent works. What are the permanent changes?<li>Replacing the temporary ‘wand’ cycle lane segregation on St. Pancras Way with new raised stepped cycle tracks. This is because ‘wands’ are easily broken, and stepped cycle tracks provide a better ride quality with a more useable width. This also improves emergency vehicle response times (vehicles can pull over onto the cycle tracks to allow emergency vehicles through).</li> <li>Retaining the shared-use bus stop border between Camden Road and Agar Grove to provide safe continuous cycling and to minimise delays for bus passengers.</li> <li>Upgrading three existing zebra crossings near Georgiana Street, College Grove and Granary Street to “raised” zebra crossings, providing level crossing points for pedestrians and traffic calming features to slow vehicles. Two of these existing zebra crossings would also be upgraded to raised &#39;parallel zebra&#39; (cycle and pedestrian) crossings near Georgiana Street and Pratt Street, providing safer crossing points for cyclists and pedestrians.</li> <li>Creating a new shared space (cycle and pedestrian) area on the footway on the north western side of the junction of St Pancras Way and Georgiana Street, giving the opportunity for southbound cyclists on St Pancras Way to access Georgiana Street when using the new parallel crossing</li> <li>Adding blue cycle lane surfacing across side roads and junctions with cycle symbols to provide an increased awareness of cyclists.</li> <li>Installing ‘blended pedestrian crossings’ across side roads of Wrotham Road, Barker Drive and College Grove. Banning the right turn onto Bisham Gardens will help to prevent vehicles using this route as a cut through between main roads, making it safer for people to walk and cycle. The schemes help to discourage car trips, particularly amongst parents and carers, by providing a safe and inviting space for more walking, cycling, and scooting.

Residents highlighted issues with through-motor traffic on the Kentish Town Healthy Streets Project <a href="https://healthystreetsforcamdenmap.commonplace.is/comments/5e3da2db3f91e20010a9ff35">Commonplace map</a> . As 69% of households in Camden do not own a car and public transport capacity remains much lower than before the pandemic, we know that safe and easy walking, cycling and scooting routes are more important than ever. Supporting and encouraging those who are able to walk and cycle, by creating safer streets will ensure that there is more space available on public transport and on our roads for those who need it the most. How have we responded to this challenge?We have installed barriers and a droppable bollard near the junction of Wilmot Place and St Pancras Way preventing through-motor traffic along Wilmot Place and Rochester Road. Access to all properties on both sides of the restriction has been maintained so residents are still able to reach their homes by car and receive home deliveries but through-motor traffic is prevented. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to travel through at all times. July 2022 - Update.The decision has been made to progress with the trial Haverstock Hill pop up cycle lanes. We have listened to the views of the local community, from the consultation to direct feedback from you and your neighbours. As a result we have made several amendments to the trial scheme, including improvements for emergency services, making the cycle lanes more visible and improving the pedestrian crossing points. You can read more on our <a href="http://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3341">decision on our website</a> . We have also released a <a href="https://news.camden.gov.uk/haverstock-hill-and-rosslyn-hill-transport-trial-scheme-approved-following-public-consultation/">press release</a> on the decision. Construction is underway and close to completion. You can <a href="https://s3-eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/commonplace-customer-assets/safetravelcamden/HH%20Pre-construction%20Letter%20Jan%2022.pdf">read the letter</a> we have sent to local residents, businesses and stakeholders. The changes include:• Provision of protected cycle lanes in both directions on Haverstock Hill/ Rosslyn Hill (between the junctions with Prince of Wales Road and Pond Street). Following feedback from the consultation we will make the spacing between wands wider in most places than initially proposed, so that there will be sufficient space along the route for vehicles to pull over, if safe to do so, to allow emergency vehicles to overtake. Blue surfacing across side roads will also provide drivers with increased awareness of those cycling.• Adding 4 new zebra crossings and one new signalised pedestrian crossing.• Introduce new benches along the Haverstock Hill / Rosslyn Hill corridor. This will provide a place for people to stop and rest.• Extending the hours of operation of the bus lane from Monday - Friday 3pm - 7pm (current) to Monday - Sunday 24/7. Following feedback from the consultation we will make a small amendment to the northbound pavement close to the junction of Ornan Road to provide space for a wider <a href="http://1.5m">1.5m</a> protected cycle lane whilst ensuring buses and motorists are not delayed unnecessarily. The existing bus lane will remain and a 2m wide pavement will be provided• Add shared use bus boarders (SUBBS) at most bus stops to enable cyclists to remain separated from traffic throughout their journey. Following feedback from the consultation we will install the southbound SUBBS in phases. This will allow us to gain a better understanding of whether or not there are any significant road safety concerns associated with introducing SUBBs on a steeper gradient and if any additional design changes may be required.• Improving the experience at junctions for those walking and cycling by adding ‘pedestrian countdown’, ‘Cycle Early Release’ and larger Advance Stop Line facilities.• Removing the majority of parking provision on Haverstock Hill/ Rosslyn Hill and relocating some of this provision to adjacent side roads. Some disabled parking and some loading provision will be retained on Haverstock Hill/ Rosslyn Hill and an extra disabled parking bay will be provided.• Install more cycle parking to help people switch their journey to the shops by bike.The scheme will be implemented under an 18-month Experimental Traffic Order, which will enable the improvements to be implemented on a trial basis. This will allow the Council to observe how the proposed changes are operating before carrying out a full public consultation, after twelve months, to decide whether or not the scheme is made permanent. The Experimental Traffic Order period and scheme construction is scheduled to start in early 2022.Have your sayWe are using Experimental Traffic Orders to make these changes. This allows us to trial changes on streets as an experiment so that we can see how they work before any decision on whether to make them permanent is made. Camden is supporting local businesses and working to create destinations for our residents and visitors to enjoy that are vibrant and inviting.Streateries were created when COVID-19 changed how we used cafes, restaurants and pubs many are now being kept to continue to boost local businesses.Streateries provide new space on the road to place outside tables and chairs, protected by barriers. We are proposing to make changes on Camden Street at the junctions of Bonny Street and Camden Gardens to improve walking and cycling access across Camden Street.The proposed changes would provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, with continuous footway crossings at the junctions, more space on the pavement and allow cyclists access between Bonny Street and Camden Gardens.For more information and to have your say<a data-uw-rm-brl="false" href="https://consultations.wearecamden.org/supporting-communities/camden-street/"> take part in the consultation now open until 24th March.</a>

Lower Kilburn High RoadThank you to everyone who took part in the consultation in July 2022 on the permanent scheme you can <a href="http://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3715">read the decision report. </a> What is the challenge on Kilburn High Road?Kilburn High Road is a major road with significant amounts of motor vehicles using this route. It has also had a very high number of road traffic casualties in recent years; with 54 pedestrian casualties recorded between 2016 and 2018, of which 2 were fatal and 11 serious. As well as being a major A-road, the road is an important bus route with the lower part of Kilburn High Road carrying five bus routes.We are working in partnership with Brent Council and Westminster City Council to transform the town centre for pedestrians and shoppers and improve the very poor road safety record of this road. This scheme will help to deliver the Councils’ transport priorities including increasing walking and cycling, improving air quality and making our streets and transport networks safe, accessible and inclusive for all.What are we doing?Following the public consultation we have <a href="http://democracy.camden.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=3715">made the decision</a> to go ahead with a permanent scheme, we are making changes to the lower part of Kilburn High Road to improve road safety, provide better walking and cycling infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and improved bus priority infrastructure making your journeys more efficient. The permanent changes include:<li>Keeping the altered bus lane hours of operation: Monday - Friday 7am - 10am and 4pm - 7pm, Saturday - Sunday 10am - 7pm</li> <li>Keeping the short section of new bus lane south of Kilburn Priory leading into the existing southbound bus lane. </li> <li>Keeping the changes to the waiting and loading restrictions within bus and cycle lanes. </li> <li>Converting the short section of cycle lane between Kilburn Priory and West End Lane into a segregated cycle lane.</li> <li>Installing benches, trees and a cycle hangar in the area.</li>
